Instructions for Reporting Current Mortgage Payments

Lenders are under no obligation to report current mortgage payments to the credit bureaus to retaliate against Bankruptcy Debtors for not reaffirming their mortgage loans.  However, Debtors can report current payments to the credit bureaus themselves:

1)   request a payment history from the mortgage company (free of charge once each year);

2)   file a dispute with each of the credit bureaus attaching a copy of the payment history;

3)  the credit bureau has 30 days to verify the accuracy with the mortgage company after which it must report according to the history.

Repeat this process regularly to keep the information updated, and keep a copy of the payment history to provide when applying for new credit.  Access to free annual credit reports from all three major credit bureaus and their dispute processes can be found at:  https://www.annualcreditreport.org.
